2023 has been the warmest globally since records began. High temperatures have arrived much earlier than normal and there have been many episodes of extreme heat that have been enhanced by climate change.
Both sea and air temperatures have soared to levels never seen before. In July, many countries in southern Europe, North America and China recorded local record temperatures above 45ºC, causing hundreds of deaths.
In the Asian country, for its part, global warming has made extreme heat events 50 times more likely.
In response to these phenomena, there are extreme event observation satellites, which detect and monitor extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and droughts, providing crucial information for the prediction and mitigation of natural disasters; a relevant topic for the current scenario we face in relation to climate change.
